What is Gion Matsuri?

Gion Matsuri is Kyoto’s most famous festival and one of Japan’s three greatest traditional festivals. Organized by Yasaka Shrine, the festival has a history of more than 1,000 years and takes place throughout the month of July.

Originally held to pray for protection from epidemics and disasters, Gion Matsuri has evolved into a vibrant celebration of Kyoto’s culture and traditions. The festival’s highlights include the spectacular Yamahoko Float Processions and the lively Yoiyama evenings, when the streets are filled with illuminated floats, traditional music, and festive atmosphere.

Gion Matsuri is held from July 1 to July 31 each year.
