Today, Kyoto was filled with excitement as the Yamahoko Hikizome, the traditional float-pulling ceremony of the Gion Festival’s Saki Matsuri, took place.
The streets were crowded with visitors who came to see the magnificent festival floats being pulled through the city for the first time this year. The sound of traditional festival music, the impressive decorations of the floats, and the lively atmosphere made it a truly memorable summer scene in Kyoto.

During the Hikizome ceremony, members of the public may also have the special opportunity to help pull some of the enormous floats. It is a wonderful way to experience the history and community spirit of the Gion Festival up close.

The Gion Festival is one of Kyoto’s most famous and important annual events. As the main procession approaches, the city becomes increasingly festive, attracting people from across Japan and around the world.

A Night of Light Inspired by the Temple’s Principal Deity

Every spring and autumn, Shoren-in Temple hosts its famous evening illumination. This special summer event continues that tradition, celebrating the profound connection between the temple and light.

The temple’s principal deity, Shijoko Nyorai (Tejaprabhā Buddha), symbolizes radiant light itself. Its manifestation, Fudō Myōō, who is enshrined here as the National Treasure Blue Fudō Myōō, is depicted surrounded by flames. Because of this deep spiritual association, light has long held special significance at Shoren-in.

More than 1,000 lighting fixtures transform the temple grounds into a breathtaking work of art. Once serving as a temporary Imperial Palace during the Edo period, Shoren-in—also known as Awata Gosho—is renowned for its elegant architecture and refined strolling garden. Visitors can first explore the historic temple buildings before strolling through the beautifully illuminated gardens.

Experience a dreamlike landscape where trees and flowers appear and fade into the darkness, admire five magnificent camphor trees designated as Natural Monuments, wander through a tranquil bamboo grove glowing in blue, and discover countless points of light shimmering like stars across the moss garden.

The story of a woman who became a geisha at the age of 29.

In Kyoto’s geisha districts, most women enter this world in their teens, shortly after graduating from junior high school. They spend five or six years training as maiko (apprentice geisha) before becoming geisha themselves around the age of twenty.

But did you know that some women become geisha without ever training as a maiko?

Hidechisa, a geisha from Pontocho, entered the geisha world at the age of 29.
Because she was already an adult, she began her career directly as a geisha rather than as a maiko.

She recalls feeling uncertain about whether she could succeed. Everyone around her had entered the profession as teenagers and had already overcome countless challenges through years of training.

In fact, she had once tried to enter this world when she was a teenager. After moving to Kyoto from her hometown, she began training in a geisha district.
However, she struggled with the strict rules and customs, and the pressure eventually affected her health. Less than six months later, she gave up and left.

After graduating from university, she worked for a company and pursued a conventional career. Yet she could never completely let go of her dream of becoming a geisha.

Eventually, she decided to return.

Although many of the people around her are younger than she is, they are still her seniors, having trained as maiko for years. It is often said that geisha who skip the maiko stage face additional challenges because they have less recognition among customers.

There were times when memories of her earlier failure came back to her, leaving her frustrated and even in tears.

But having already experienced the regret of giving up once, she was determined not to live with that regret again. With renewed resolve, she returned to the geisha district and began a new chapter, striving to become a geisha worthy of the respect and recognition of those around her.

Even many local people know surprisingly little about the world of geisha.

The training is demanding, and life does not suddenly become easy after becoming a geisha. Yet some women return after setbacks, while others leave their families as teenagers to dedicate themselves to years of rigorous training.

What drives them to continue?

I believe the answer lies in a profound sense of mission and pride, the belief that they are the living custodians of traditions and culture that are gradually fading in modern society.

My Thoughts on Maiko and What I Want Visitors to Kyoto to Know

Before I begin, it may be helpful to know that a maiko is an apprentice geiko (the Kyoto term for geisha).
Through years of training in traditional arts, etiquette, and hospitality, maiko work toward becoming fully qualified geiko.

Having been born and raised in Kyoto, I remember admiring maiko when I was a child.
Dressed in their beautiful and colorful kimono, they seemed elegant and glamorous.

Perhaps it is similar to how many Western children dream of becoming princesses and wearing beautiful gowns.

But even as a child, there was one thing I could hardly imagine: leaving home and living away from my family at the age of fifteen.

Today, many teenagers spend their free time on smartphones, watching YouTube videos or scrolling through social media. For a maiko, however, there is little time for such things.

Before becoming accomplished artists, they must dedicate themselves to years of training.
Their days begin early, helping with preparations, attending lessons, and practicing traditional arts.
They devote themselves to learning dance, etiquette, conversation, and many other skills.

In some ways, their lives may be even more demanding than those of students who leave home to attend boarding schools.

Yet despite these challenges, there are still young girls who choose this path. With the support of their families, some even move to Kyoto from distant parts of Japan to pursue their dream of becoming a maiko.

Such determination should never be underestimated.

There may have been nights when they missed their families and friends. There may have been moments when they questioned their decision or felt lonely.
But by overcoming these hardships, they continue on the path to becoming maiko and eventually geiko.

That is why I have great respect for them.

The maiko of Gion are not simply beautiful figures to photograph. They are dedicated professionals who have committed themselves to preserving one of Kyoto’s most treasured cultural traditions.

They are also precious to the teahouses and communities that have invested years in their training and development.

If you are fortunate enough to see a maiko in Gion, I hope you will simply admire her from a respectful distance.

Please take a moment to appreciate the dedication, discipline, and sacrifice behind the beauty you see.

A maiko is not a tourist attraction.

She is a young professional carrying forward a centuries old tradition.
